A pre-owned Rolex should be judged on its reference, its serial and its original parts, never on photographs alone. This page gathers the Rolex watches we list in Athens, from the Oyster Perpetual, Datejust and Explorer to the Submariner, GMT-Master II, Sky-Dweller, Day-Date and Daytona, and our master watchmaker inspects every piece before sale. Listings with a price are in stock. Listings marked "Price upon request" are references we can source to order, and we will tell you plainly what sourcing involves.

Buying a Pre-Owned Rolex in Athens

Start with the reference, because it tells you what the rest of the watch should be. Rolex references went from four digits to five from the late 1970s, then to six in the 2000s. The last digit usually shows the material and the second-to-last the bezel type, while letter suffixes name the bezel colour: LN for black, LV for green, BLRO for blue and red. From about 2010–2011 serials are random, so a modern Rolex is dated by its papers or guarantee card, not by its serial.

The reference then sets the checks. A five-digit sports model such as the 16610LV should carry an aluminium bezel insert, while the insert on the 116 and 126 generations is Cerachrom. The calibre must match as well, for example 3235 in a 126610LN Submariner Date or 4131 in a 126500LN Daytona. The -2/+2 seconds a day Superlative Chronometer figure belongs to Rolex's 2015 criteria, so do not hold older watches to it.

  • Remove the bracelet to read the reference at 12 o'clock and the serial at 6 between the lugs. From 2005 Rolex also began engraving the serial on the rehaut. The engraving should be crisp and even, and the serial must match the guarantee card or papers.
  • Confirm the dial print, lume, hands and bezel insert suit the reference, with no added diamonds or aftermarket parts. Rolex's guarantee excludes watches modified with non-genuine bezels, cases, dials or movement parts.
  • Have the case back opened to confirm the calibre, such as 3285 in a 126710BLRO GMT-Master II.
  • Check that the end links and clasp codes are correct for the reference, the bracelet barely sags, the lug lines are sharp and the fluted gold bezel of a Datejust or Day-Date is not worn down.
  • Screw the crown down, then ask for a pressure test, a timing check and the service invoices. Rolex recommends service approximately every 10 years, depending on the model and how it is worn.

Questions We Are Asked About Rolex

Is GrecoWatch an authorised Rolex dealer?

No. We are an independent dealer and workshop, not an Official Rolex Retailer or an authorised service centre, and the official Rolex service centre in Athens is at Stadiou 3. Rolex's five-year guarantee applies to new watches bought from Official Rolex Retailers, so on a pre-owned piece any remaining cover depends on the date on the card.

Should I buy a Rolex without box and papers?

Yes, if the watch itself checks out. Papers count only when their serial matches the case, and on a Rolex made from about 2010–2011 onwards, with a random serial, they are the main way to date it. Without them, the reference, serial, parts and movement must prove the watch, and the serial should be checked against a stolen-watch register.

For how we check a watch before it is offered, see buying a used Rolex in Athens. Read our guides to buying a Rolex from a secondary-market dealer and what missing box and papers really mean. To sell or trade in, see selling your Rolex in Athens, and for servicing, our independent watch workshop uses original parts only, with a written 2-year warranty on the service.
