Buying a Pre-Owned Rolex Sky-Dweller in Athens

Start with the reference number, because it tells you the generation. Sky-Dwellers numbered 326xxx carry calibre 9001, which Rolex fitted from the 2012 launch until 2023. The 336xxx references carry calibre 9002, a development of the 9001 that adds Rolex's Chronergy escapement. Both calibres use a Parachrom hairspring and run about 72 hours in a 42 mm Oyster case rated to 100 metres. The 336xxx is certified as a Superlative Chronometer, to -2/+2 seconds a day after casing.

The rest of the number tells you what the watch should be made of. On the white Rolesor 326934 and 336934, only the fluted bezel is 18k white gold, and the case and bracelet are Oystersteel. On the yellow Rolesor 326933 and 336933, the bezel and bracelet centre links are yellow gold. Solid gold references such as the 326938 or 336935 should be gold throughout. Straps follow the same logic: 3261xx references came on leather, 3262xx and 3362xx on Oysterflex with a Glidelock clasp, and a mismatch suggests swapped parts. Dials help date a watch too: the early gold references offered Roman or Arabic numerals, while most dials from 2017 onwards have luminous rectangular hour markers.

• Turn the Ring Command bezel through all three positions. Each should click cleanly into place and select only its own function: date and month, local time or the 24-hour reference disc. When you set local time, the hour hand should jump without stopping the seconds or moving the reference disc.
• Test the Saros annual calendar: with the month set to April, advance the date past the 30th. It should jump straight to the 1st, and the highlighted aperture should move from the fourth hour marker to the fifth, with only one month highlighted at a time.
• Look closely at the fluted bezel. It is precious metal and the function selector at once, so dents, softened or over-polished fluting and any sign of a non-Rolex replacement affect both value and function.
• Ask for a pressure test to 100 metres. The screw-down Twinlock crown sets every function, so it is unscrewed more often than on most Rolex models, and its threads and seals deserve a careful look.
• Match the case reference and serial to the guarantee card. The five-year Rolex guarantee runs from the purchase date at an Official Rolex Retailer, so read that date before assuming any cover remains.
