Buying a Rolex Day-Date: What to Look For

Buying a Rolex Day-Date — gold President with Monday day window

The Day-Date is Rolex’s flagship — the “President,” made only in gold or platinum, wearing the bracelet that took its nickname from the wrists of world leaders. It is the model where dial variety, precious metal and condition interact most strongly with price, and where aftermarket modifications are most common. Here is what to check before you buy one.

Only precious metal — never steel

Every genuine Day-Date is yellow, white or Everose gold, or platinum. A “steel Day-Date” does not exist — any such watch is fake or heavily modified. Weight is your first clue: a gold President has unmistakable heft.

Sizes and generations

  • Day-Date 36: the classic. Modern reference family 128235/128238/128239 (from 2019) runs calibre 3255; the previous 118xxx generation uses calibre 3155.
  • Day-Date 40 (2015–present): references 228235/228236/228238/228239, launched with calibre 3255 — 70-hour power reserve, Chronergy escapement, ±2 s/day. The larger, contemporary presence.
  • Day-Date II 41mm (2008–2015): the bigger predecessor (218xxx), discontinued in favour of the slimmer 40.

The President bracelet

The semi-circular three-piece link President bracelet belongs to the Day-Date (and some precious-metal Datejusts historically). Check for stretch on older examples — gold links wear faster than steel — and confirm the clasp is the correct concealed Crownclasp. A tired, stretchy bracelet is expensive to address in gold.

Dials: where Day-Date value concentrates

Ombré, onyx, ice blue (platinum’s signature), green, and factory diamond dials each carry their own market. Two rules protect you: platinum dials belong on platinum watches (ice blue is platinum-only), and factory gem-setting is worth a premium while aftermarket setting subtracts value. The day wheel comes in many languages — original language wheels matching the market of sale support provenance.

Red flags

  • Any “steel” Day-Date, or a gold watch that feels light.
  • Aftermarket diamond dials or bezels sold as factory.
  • Bracelet stretch, soft-cornered fluting, or over-polished cases.
  • An ice-blue dial on anything but platinum.

Day-Date buying checklist

  • Confirm metal and weight; verify hallmarks and reference match the metal.
  • Choose size (36 vs 40) and confirm generation and calibre (3155 vs 3255).
  • Verify the dial and any gem-setting are factory original.
  • Inspect the President bracelet for stretch and the Crownclasp for correct action.
  • Day and date must both jump cleanly around midnight.
  • Prefer a full set; buy from a specialist who authenticates every watch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the Day-Date called the “President”?

The nickname comes from its dedicated President bracelet and its association with heads of state since the 1950s. The name properly describes the bracelet; the watch is the Day-Date.

Does the Day-Date come in steel?

No. The Day-Date has only ever been made in gold or platinum. Any steel example is not genuine.

What is the difference between Day-Date 36 and Day-Date 40?

Size and generation. The 40 (2015+) launched with the modern calibre 3255 and a 70-hour reserve; the 36 gained the same movement from 2019 (128xxx). Earlier 118xxx 36mm models use calibre 3155.

How can I be sure a Day-Date is authentic?

Weight, hallmarks, dial correctness and movement all matter — and modern fakes imitate all of them. Buy from a dealer who authenticates the watch, and for certainty have it verified at an official Rolex Service Centre.
