More mechanical watches are damaged by careless setting than by accidents. The movements inside a Rolex are robust, but a few habits \u2014 setting the date at the wrong hour, forcing the crown, over-winding by hand \u2014 cause avoidable and expensive repairs. Here is the correct routine, in order.<\/p>\n

Unscrewing the crown<\/h2>\n

Rolex Oyster cases use a screw-down crown. Turn it anti-clockwise<\/strong> until it releases and springs out \u2014 never pull first. Support the watch in your hand rather than operating it on the wrist: setting on-wrist forces the crown at an angle and is the leading cause of bent stems.<\/p>\n

Winding a stopped watch<\/h2>\n

With the crown unscrewed at its first position, turn it clockwise about 25\u201330 times<\/strong>. Modern Rolex movements have a slipping clutch on the mainspring, so you cannot over-wind them \u2014 but do not spin the crown aggressively either. An automatic worn daily needs no hand-winding; it winds itself.<\/p>\n

The danger zone \u2014 never set the date between 9pm and 3am<\/h2>\n

This is the single most important rule. During those hours the movement’s date-change gears are engaged, and forcing a quick-set date while they are meshed can break teeth \u2014 a costly repair. Set the time to around 6 o’clock first<\/strong>, then set the date safely, then set the correct time.<\/p>\n

The correct setting sequence<\/h2>\n

  1. Unscrew the crown (anti-clockwise) and let it spring out.<\/li>\n
  2. If stopped, wind ~25\u201330 turns clockwise.<\/li>\n
  3. Pull to the middle position and move the hands to roughly 6 o’clock.<\/li>\n
  4. Quick-set the date to yesterday’s<\/em> date.<\/li>\n
  5. Return to the time position and advance the hands forwards<\/strong> past midnight \u2014 when the date flips, you know you are in AM.<\/li>\n
  6. Continue forwards to the correct time (past noon if it is afternoon).<\/li>\n
  7. Push the crown in and screw it fully down<\/strong> clockwise.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Always move the hands forwards. Winding backwards past midnight puts unnecessary stress on the date mechanism.<\/p>\n

    On watch winders<\/h2>\n

    A winder is convenient for calendar watches you wear occasionally, but it is not necessary \u2014 and constant unnecessary rotation adds wear. For most owners, letting a watch stop and setting it when needed is perfectly fine and gentler on the movement.<\/p>\n
