The single most reliable filter is who you are buying from. An established dealer with a physical address, verified reviews and a written authenticity guarantee has every incentive to sell only genuine watches. A stranger with a “deal” has none. Price is the first tell: genuine Rolex sports models trade at or above retail \u2014 a Submariner at half price is not a bargain, it is a fake.<\/p>\n
Genuine Rolexes are dense \u2014 904L steel, solid links, precious-metal models heavier still. Many fakes feel light, with hollow links and sharp, unfinished edges. The winding crown should thread smoothly and the bezel (where present) should click with precision, not wobble.<\/p>\n
Serial and reference numbers are engraved with clean, sharp lines. Acid-etched, shallow or dotty engraving is a warning. And with only rare historical exceptions, Rolex casebacks are plain, solid metal: a display (glass) caseback or an engraved logo caseback on a standard model means fake.<\/p>\n
The sweep of a genuine Rolex second hand is smooth (28,800 beats per hour on most models). But be careful: good fakes now use automatic movements that also sweep. The definitive check is opening the case \u2014 a genuine calibre is finished, decorated and signed in ways no counterfeit replicates under a watchmaker’s loupe. That is why the final word always belongs to a professional.<\/p>\n
Warranty cards, boxes and receipts are all counterfeited. Treat papers as supporting evidence, never proof. A genuine watch with no papers is worth more than a fake with a full set \u2014 authenticate the watch, not the packaging.<\/p>\n
